The journey

We have touched down on Australian soil! It took the combination of a luxurious 7 hour flight (double decker plane!), a sprint through Abu Dhabi airport security with minus 30 minutes to make our connection, followed by a 13 hour long-haul on a considerably smaller plane with more than double the amount of people on board – but we made it! Adam spent the majority of the journey playing ‘pong’ on his screen whilst I was mostly entertained by the sleeping people with open gobs, before becoming one of them and catching some zzzz’s myself.

The excitement of stepping out of the airport and into the heat of a hot country was slightly over shadowed by the realisation that by going through the contemporary e-passport route we had cut out the guy who stamps your passport. We did ask if anyone had a stamp once we’d got through and out into arrivals but we were met with a chuckling baggage claim guy who expressed his surprise that we wanted to stick around and get back to immigration “usually people get through here and they run!”.

A quick taxi journey brought us to our accomodation – views of lightning and black skies welcomed us into the city as we made a dash from the taxi into the hotel reception to sort out the formalities. Within half an hour we were relaxed and reclined on the sofas with take-out pizza and beers, stocked up and ready for breakfast in the morning. All that’s left to do now is wash off 24 hours worth of travel sweat and decide where in Melbourne we want to start our sightseeing in the morning!!

Brilliant! I love the fact that you wanted to go back and get your passport stamped, that’s what I would have done too
